09 Mar March Feature Facilitator – Ms. Katy Churcher
As we spring into March, let’s meet Ms. Katy Churcher, our feature facilitator for this month. Ms. Churcher has been at Xspace for about one and a half years. She is from Bowen Island, Vancouver (which is just a short ferry ride away). Prior to joining Xspace, she has had plenty of experience working with students of various ages teaching them English.

During her student days, Ms. Churcher recalls how technology was not a part of her education at all and so it has been a learning experience for her to get familiar with using technology and also to use it to teach. As she has adapted to all the tools and gadgets involved in online learning, she believes that she would’ve done really well given the chance to take courses online in high school.
For Ms. Churcher, one of the best parts about working with Xspace students is helping them achieve their goals as well as getting through some of the challenges of these courses. It makes her especially happy when she sees students responding to assignments in thoughtful and creative ways.
Ms. Churcher shares how her students have taught her lots of interesting things about their different cultures. They also remind her how challenging high school years can be with the pressures of school and planning for the future.
Ms. Churcher’s advice for taking online courses is to use a calendar or planner to help remember all of the assignments that needs to be done so as to avoid falling behind, and try to get into the habit of getting assignments done as soon as they are assigned. Also, she advises students to take breaks from their computer to stretch, get outside, eat good food and drink lots of water!
